The loss of critical data can be devastating. Without a proper backup system in place, you are at risk of losing your important files, photos, and other irreplaceable data.
When a hard disk or other failure occurs, there is still the possibility of retrieving the data in one of two ways. Computer Guys utilizes special equipment and applications that can read dead hard drives and in most cases restore the missing data to CD, DVD, or portable hard disk. This can be relatively inexpensive if you bring the drive to our location and we can make a determination based on the condition of the drive. In more extreme circumstances, the drive would be shipped to a specialized data recovery service that has advanced capabilities. They disassemble the drive and copy any recoverable data to the media of your choice. This service can be very expensive, but is successful in almost all instances.
Our Advice:
» If you turn-on your computer and receive “Boot disk not found” or “Cannot read from boot disk” errors, your hard drive is possibly at risk.
» Do not attempt to restart over and over hoping that the drive will fix itself. You risk further damage by rendering any recoverable data as unrecoverable.
» If you call your computer’s manufacturer, do not (under any circumstances) allow them to walk you through the recovery process if you are not clear about what they are instructing you to do. We have seen instances where tech support calls have resulted in erasing the hard drive.
» You can bring the tower or notebook to our office where we can remove the drive and attempt recovery. We can usually determine the extent of the damage within 30 minutes and will present you with options based on the importance of the data.
